AI-generated mood boards & Refine with AI

Mortar can build a first-pass mood board for you automatically, and let you keep refining it by chatting instead of clicking.

Generating a board

Two ways to trigger it:

  • On a project's Boards page, if a room is eligible you'll see "Would you like us to generate a mood board?" — pick the room and click Generate board.
  • Ask the chat assistant (bottom-right, anywhere in the app): something like "make me a concept board for the living room" or "generate a board for [project]." It replies with a link to the new board.

Either way, Mortar assembles a draft from that room's existing items using a repeatable layout: a hero item, a supporting grid of the rest, a swatch strip, and a title. The same room with the same items always produces the same layout — it's not randomised on every attempt.

Open the link to review and edit in the normal board editor — move, resize, add or remove elements exactly as you would on a hand-built board (see Building a mood board).

Asking again for the same room replaces the previous AI-generated draft in place — you won't end up with duplicates piling up.

Always a draft

AI-generated boards are always created as drafts. The assistant can never create or edit a board that's already been shared with a client — sharing is always a separate, explicit action you take yourself in the editor.

Limits

Generation is capped to keep it from being abused or run away with: a handful of generations per chat session, and a studio-wide daily cap on new boards (covers both AI-generated and hand-built boards created that day). If a generation request is declined, wait a bit and try again, or contact support if it keeps happening.

Refine with AI

Inside the board editor, open the Refine with AI panel to keep iterating by chat instead of dragging things by hand — ask it to move, resize, restyle, or remove elements, or to rename the board or change its background colour. Like generation, this only ever touches draft boards — it can't modify a board that's currently shared, and it can't share or unshare a board on your behalf; that toggle stays a manual, in-editor action.

FAQ

Will the AI share the board with my client automatically? No. AI-generated boards are always drafts — you choose when to share.

Can I ask it to redo the board? Yes — asking again for the same room regenerates the layout and replaces the previous AI draft, with no duplicates left behind.

Can the AI edit a board I've already shared? No — it can only create or modify draft boards, never one that's already shared with a client.
